game based on the classic `Victory` wooden block system as Orcs
and Elves battle for control of the world. Four Geo- boards, and

First played the `block` system back in the days of Avalon Hill`s

Hot
List!......
Ra! (5*)
is on our current play list, and deserves a special
mention. Although its a simple game, well presented, easy to learn
and quick to play, Ra! takes
some mastering. You pit your wits against other kings through three
epochs, building up your civilisation as you go. Your aim is to
gain the most prestige in the eyes of the Sun God by the end of
the third epoch. To play, you place random tiles on a track, then
when the Sun God is invoked (either by a fellow player or one of
the random tiles), everyone bids for the current set of tiles. Winner
takes all....... Well, it sounds easy enough doesnt it? Give it
a go, you wont be disappointed.
On to El
Grande (4*), set in Spain of the Middle Ages. Your task
is to win court influence by taking control of the various provinces.
A bidding game where you bid to win first choice of the available
action cards enabling you to build up your influence, thwart the
actions of other players or generally throw a spanner in the works!
Ah! and dont forget invasion tactics! Need to make your presence
felt in Valencia? Then place an invasion force off shore in the
Castillo and surprise the living daylights out of the Valencian
courtesans when the time comes. This game is strategic, and takes
some getting used to - dont expect to win against old hands straight
away! But it is addictive like all the best games are. There is
a companion game, El
Caballero (3*), set in the New World, where exploration
is the name of the game. A good tile placer, but not quite up to
El Grande standards.
Finally
Tigris and Euphrates (5*), set
in the cradle of civilization. Its an abstract tile placing game
with a high skill level and little random element. Proper review
coming soon.
Try King
of the Elves (3*), for a bit
of fun. Build kingdoms, lay obstacles, raise taxes and use brigands
to gain tribute from the people you govern. Try and stop the other
princes from getting as much cash, and you become king of the elves!
Great fun!
Try
TIKAL! (5*), adventure and exploration in the jungles of
South America. One of the best looking games around at the moment,
with really nice feel to it. Explore ruins and gain treasures with
your band of archaeologists.
We are playing
Kahuna! (3*), a 2 player game
of strategy with a bit of luck too!. The game is based around an
Island chain, where two powerful wizards test their skills. They
devised a duel where each would build bridges between islands, gaining
control of the island if they had most briodges. The winner after
a certain time would be the wizard controlling most islands. You
simply draw cards from a face up or face down stack, build or destroy
bridges using the cards and aim to control islands. Each island
has a maximum number of bridges, and the wizard with more than half
the maximum number has control. Its a good game, and will appeal
to those of you with a strategic mind. Its not about magic, its
about your brain!
Will Settlers
of Catan (4*) make it out of the cupboard this month
- you bet it will! Still one of the best games around, if you have
not played, your life is incomplete! Dont forget to check out the
Seafarers expansion set for
the original game. Why not try a Big Islands game using two or more
sets, great fun....
